The late, great
comedian, George Carlin, was not only, brilliant and funny, but had an amazing,
unique way, of putting everyday challenges, of life and society, into some
perspective, even if it might have offended, some people. His commentaries
about education, being political correct, etc, were amazing, but the one, which
I believe, should be required listening, today, is, the skit/ act, he
performed, after the atrocities of September 11, 2001, often referred to,
as, Then the terrorists win. For many reasons, the reactions after
those events, were a combination of anger, fear, and seeking protection/
safety, but Carlin, emphasized, what the terrorists are most after, is
disrupting the American way of life, and damaging our commitment to liberty and
justice, to all, and the freedoms, guaranteed by our Bill of Rights, and Constitution.
His premise, which I adhere to, is, we must stand - up, against tyranny and
terrorism, while protecting these freedoms, for all, even if we totally
disagree with the individuals. With that in mind, this article will attempt to
briefly consider, examine, review and discuss, some recent events, which
appear, to me, to be, quite concerning.
1. Freedom of
speech: When President Trump proclaims, those who protest his
policies, should be restricted doing so, and refers to anyone who disagrees, in
derogatory terms, this, potentially, imposes, a clear, threaten to our freedom
of speech. Although I often disagree, with those with different positions
(especially political), I feel strongly, we need to defend everyone's rights,
to speak. Whether one is on the political right, left, or middle, I find it
concerning, when there is no attempt at effective listening, or attempting to
consider the common good, seeking a meeting - of - the - minds. Name - calling,
and other less - than - civil, behavior, achieves little of a positive,
productive nature.
2. Freedom of
the press: President Trump has often referred to the media, as The
Enemy of The People, and accused them of creating fake facts, when they write
or state anything, negative about him, his policies, and/ or behavior. We must
protect the rights of the press, while demanding responsibility, and integrity,
in their reporting. Today, we have seen foreign entities attempt to influence
our elections, by manipulating Social Media, etc.
3. Civil
rights: More than 6 decades of progress, in the area of civil rights,
has been attacked by the present administration. We need to protect all
Americans, of any religion (or none), races, creeds, ethnicities, etc.
Remember, when, historically, nations have permitted attacks on any group,
tyrants have felt enabled, and it's gotten worse, We should all be concerned,
in the large increase in hate crimes, in the past 2 years, perhaps because
certain individuals, have felt entitled/ enabled, because of the rhetoric/
vitriol/ tone/ actions, of certain public officials!
Wake up, America, and
protect the liberties and freedoms, that truly, makes America, great! Do so
soon, before it's too late!
