He played a soldier who once killed a German with a perfect
grenade lob to the head, but don’t ask him to — gasp! — kiss gorgeous actresses
for the cameras.
“Band of
Brothers’’ and “Desperate Housewives’’ actor Neal McDonough says his religious
beliefs — and undying devotion to his ex-model wife, Ruve Robertson — keep him
from getting up close and personal with co-stars on screen, even if it costs
him jobs and the hefty paychecks that go with them.
“I won’t kiss
any other woman because these lips are meant for one woman,” the Catholic actor
recently told Closer Weekly.
McDonough
admitted that his no-lip-service stance has lost him work in the past —
including an estimated $1 million gig on the set of ABC TV’s “Scoundrels’’ in
2010.
At the time,
the father of five refused to participate in sexy scenes with actress Virginia
Madsen.
“I was
[surprised], and it was a horrible situation for me,” the actor said about getting
the boot after just three days of shooting. “After that, I couldn’t get a job
because everybody thought I was this religious zealot. I am very religious. I
put God and family first, and me second. That’s what I live by. It was hard for
a few years.
“But I was
not going to lose the fight. And it worked. My career has been phenomenal.”
The actor
played the husband of Nicollette Sheridan’s character on “Desperate
Housewives.’’
“When
[creator] Marc Cherry signed me, I said, ‘I’m sure you know, but I won’t kiss
anybody,’ ” McDonough said. “He was like, ‘But this is ‘Desperate Housewives!’
I said, ‘I know.’ He paused for about 5 seconds and said, ‘All right, I’m just
going to have to write better.’ And we had a great time.”
The 6-foot
actor has been married to Robertson, a 6-foot-3 former bikini model from South
Africa, since 2003.
The pair met
on the street in London in 2001 and it was love at first sight, he shared.
“It was St.
Patrick’s Day and we literally bumped into each other on the street, locked eyes,
and that was it,” the actor said. “The next morning, I called the woman I was
dating at the time and said, ‘I’m sorry, it’s not going to work out with us
anymore — I just met the woman I’m going to marry.’ ”
McDonough is
starring in the History Channel’s “Project Blue Book” about the US military and
UFO sightings.
